Un-Cruise Adventures Returns to Pacific Northwest

22-guest Safari Quest yacht gunkholes through Washington’s San Juan
and British Columbia’s Gulf Islands
Seattle, WA, January 28, 2013Un-Cruise Adventures’ newly renovated 22-guest yacht Safari Quest returns to the Pacific Northwest in 2013 with 19 Luxury Adventure departures set for spring and fall and a new itinerary sailing roundtrip Seattle. Known as a yachter’s paradise, Washington’s scenic San Juan Islands and British Columbia’s Gulf Islands are a favorite destination for boaters on leisurely explorations.
Weeklong Pacific Northwest Passage cruises depart roundtrip from Seattle, WA from March-May and  Areas visited include Harmony Islands, Princess Louisa Inlet, Jervis Inlet, Nanaimo, Gulf Islands and Victoria, BC; San Juan Islands and Friday Harbor, WA. Gunkholing is a term widely used in the Northwest to describe a style of boating among the islands—meandering from place to place seeking out isolated anchorages.
“The Safari Quest’s intimate size enables us to take full advantage of narrow passageways and scenic, remote bays in the Salish Sea,” said Tim Jacox, executive vice president of sales and marketing. “It is truly like being on your own private yacht, but better—you are relaxing and enjoying the scenery and activities.”
A highlight of the journey is extended time in Princess Louisa Inlet, a stunning fjord with mile high cliffs rising up from the water and Chatterbox Falls at the head of the inlet. The yacht anchors overnight with time to hike ashore and explore by kayak and skiff.
In Victoria, guests enjoy free time to explore downtown, visit the elegant Empress Hotel or Royal British Columbia Museum before traveling to the 55 acre Butchart Gardens for High Tea and a tour of its flower and foliage displays. The Harmony Islands and Buccaneer Bay beckon guests outside to explore via kayak and skiff. Though wildlife may be found anywhere, Jervis Inlet is a good place to look for orca whales, porpoise, seals and sea lions. In Friday Harbor, guests visit the Whale Museum and spend time wandering through the quaint town. A flexible itinerary enhances the gunkholing adventure with freedom to seek out wildlife and explore by sea and shore.
The Safari Quest will be fresh from a major refurbishment of interior spaces including the Captain staterooms on Bridge deck and a new hot tub on the Observation deck. A new bow camera streams underwater views of dolphins and other sea life to TVs in the lounge and staterooms. The upscale yacht has 11 staterooms, all with Tempur-pedic memory foam mattresses, iPod docking station and flatscreen TV with DVD player. Unique among yachts, the Safari Quest’s four Captain staterooms feature sliding glass doors and French balconies. Other amenities include fitness equipment and a DVD/book library.
Adventure activities include nature walks, skiff excursions, wildlife searches, kayaking, paddle boarding, beachcombing and shoreside tours. Rates begin at US$3,995 per person based on double occupancy. The Luxury Adventure includes all meals, premium wine/beer/spirits, transfers and port fees and taxes. Galapagos Small-Ship Cruise Operator, Ecoventura.

Galapagos Small-Ship Cruise Operator, Ecoventura,
Helps Launch Study of Effects of Galapagos Marine Reserve

How do the experts know if a conservation project is fulfilling its goals?

This is the question posed by scientists of the Galapagos Science Center and the Galapagos community concerning the Galapagos Marine Reserve established in 1998 on a provisional basis because at the time there was a lack of scientific information on the local biodiversity.

Fourteen years later, a barometer of the reserve’s success is how well – or not – the sharks are doing.

Ecoventura (http://www.ecoventura.com), that operates an environmentally friendly fleet of small expedition yachts in the Galapagos Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recently volunteered one of its four yachts, The M/V Galapagos Sky, a live-aboard dive boat, to participate in the beginning phase of a shark conservation analysis that engaged the ship in late December and early January 2013. The goal moving forward is to gather data on the diversity, abundance and distribution of focal species. The data will help guide the design of a new zoning scheme for the reserve based on determinations of spatial extensions of key habitats for Galapagos’ flagship species, including sharks. Elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) are top predators and keystone species in their ecosystems and therefore serve as sentinels for the general health of the ecosystem and its community.

About Ecoventura: Ecoventura is a family-owned company based in Guayaquil, Ecuador, with sales offices in Quito and Miami. In operation since 1990, the cruise company transports 4,000+ passengers annually aboard its fleet of three expedition vessels; Eric, Flamingo and Letty, identical, superior first-class 20-passenger motor yachts. The company also operates the M/V Galapagos Sky, a 16-passenger dedicated dive live-aboard offering 7-night weekly itineraries visiting the northern islands of Wolf and Darwin.

To reserve a cabin or private charter, or to receive a copy of Ecoventura’s 2013 catalog please call toll-free 1.800.633.7972, or e-mail info@galapagosnetwork.com. To access current rates, schedules and itineraries log on to http://www.ecoventura.com/.

Hapag-Lloyd North West Passage.

In August 2013, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises will be offering a Northwest Passage itinerary on the only 5-star expedition vessel in the world, the MS HANSEATIC. The HANSEATIC’s cruise will be guaranteed bilingual, departing Kangerlussuaq, Greenland on August 16, 2013 for a 24-night voyage starting in Greenland and cruising north of the Arctic Circle and ending in Nome, Alaska on September 9. It is one of the most famous sea routes in the world and has been both a myth and challenge for centuries.

The HANSEATIC premiered the Northwest Passage for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises in 1994. Since then both Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ expedition ships, the HANSEATIC and the BREMEN have successfully cruised through the Northwest Passage a total of twelve times. In summer 2009, for the first time in Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ history, both ships met in the Northwest Passage, travelling in opposite directions.
The legendary passage for the HANSEATIC starts in Greenland and crosses Disko Bay, where guests can observe the bizarrely -shaped icebergs. The ship will then cross the Canadian Arctic, the heart of the Northwest Passage. Thanks to its shallow draught, the HANSEATIC is able to sail close to the Canadian Arctic coast, giving guests box seats on the outer decks for viewing the rugged and icy panoramas of the shores. Guests will be thrilled to encounter caribou, polar bears, musk oxen, bald eagles, and whales, while taking full advantage of the many Zodiac landings to explore the impressive glacial coasts along the route.

Other planned highlights (weather permitting): a visit to a former whaling base on Herschel Island; a landing in Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island, including a visit to the wreck of the "Maud," in which Roald Amundsen conquered the Northwest Passage; zodiac landings in Peel Sound, the Franklin Strait and Larsen Sound; and a stop in Barrow, Alaska, the most northern city in the world.
The voyage-only fares lead-in at £13,210 per person, based on double occupancy for an outside cabin. For more information, visit www.hl-cruises.com.

Quark's Spitsbergen Cruises

Quark have two expedition programmes that journey around Spitsbergen, the largest island within the Svalbard archipelago. Zodiac landings involve leaving the shelter of the main ship and using small landing craft to get up close to the coastline and animals with polar experts.

What is also great about these cruises to Spitsbergen are the opportunities to get to grips with wildlife photography and filming. You can capture amazing shots of polar bears, walrus, whales and seals. On board experts are on hand to help spot the animals as well as advise on photography of these wonderful creatures. A photographic journal is also produced by Quark over the course of the journey and given to travellers on a DVD upon return.

The Spitsbergen Explorer is the classic Arctic adventure taking in colonies of sea birds and Svalbard reindeer and Arctic foxes as well as the animals already mentioned as the ship sets sail from Longyearbyen exploring the coastline north and south. As well as the sights the sounds are something to behold and something that doesn’t often spring to mind, particularly that of the walrus, as well as wildflowers that bloom in the summer months unexpectedly. The slightly longer Spitsbergen Circumnavigation programme circles the whole of this remarkable island and with continuous light prevailing in the summertime wildlife can be viewed whenever adventurers are awake.

Two departures (14th June and 24th June 2013) are available for the Spitsbergen Explorer with prices starting at £3,170 per person based on accommodation in a triple cabin. The expedition lasts 11 days touring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Spitsbergen and includes accommodation on the very comfortable Sea Spirit, all meals and snacks, Zodiac landings, expert presentations and guiding, photographic journal and transfers. Similarly the Spitsbergen Circumnavigation includes the above but lasts 13 days with prices starting at £4,120 per person based on accommodation in a triple cabin. Departures for the Spitsbergen Circumnavigation are 4th July and 16th July 2013.

'Blue Cruise'. Turkey’s coastline

Blue Cruise
Enjoy a relaxing holiday aboard a gulet, a traditional wooden sailing boat, otherwise known as a Mavi Yolculuk or 'Blue Cruise'. Much of Turkey’s coastline is only accessible by boat, making sailing the ideal way to explore this secret beauty, stopping off at your leisure to explore a historic site or visit a charming village. The tale of the gulet began in Bodrum, with the book Mavi Yolculuk, in which the author Cevat Sakir Kabaagac described his idyllic 'blue cruise' voyage around the coast of Bodrum with the local sponge fishermen.
Gulets have since evolved from traditional fishing and cargo vessels into their present form, perfect for a relaxing holiday away from the crowds; most vessels have large sunbathing decks, dining area and cabins below – most also have motors as well as sails. Gulets can be fully chartered by a group or are sold on a cabin basis by tour operators – style and comfort can vary greatly according to price. Most gulets also travel a specific route on the Aegean or Mediterranean coastlines, taking in the azure waters, a multitude of isolated bays and tiny islands. For those who prefer less time at sea, day trips can be arranged from any resort, either by booking through your operator, local agency or visiting the local harbour first thing in the morning.

New Adventure Cruise Company Launched

InnerSea Discoveries + American Safari Cruises Unveils New Company Name: Un-Cruise Adventures
Name change consolidates line’s adventure styles
Marking another milestone in its 16 year evolution, adventure cruise line InnerSea Discoveries/American Safari Cruises has officially changed its name to Un-Cruise Adventures. The line operates seven boats carrying 22-88 guests in Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico’s Sea of Cortés, Columbia and Snake Rivers and Coastal Washington and British Columbia.
“We’ve experienced phenomenal growth and success over the last four years,” said Dan Blanchard, principal and CEO. “What began as yacht cruising under the American Safari Cruises name has now expanded to include more styles of Un-Cruise Adventures, and this name change reflects that growth.”
The company has three yachts offering Luxury Adventures—22-guest Safari Quest, 36-guest Safari Explorer and 86-guest Safari Endeavour—an inclusive, upscale experience along with adventure activities. The 88-guest Safari Legacy, a replica Victorian steamer, debuts in August 2013 and will offer inclusive Heritage Adventures focusing on Living History aboard and ashore through presentations and tours. Three expedition vessels—60-guest Wilderness Adventurer, 76-guest Wilderness Discoverer and 76-guest Wilderness Explorer—offer Active Adventures for those desiring more outdoor explorations at a lower price point. Charter Adventures are also offered on all boats.
“Un-Cruise Adventures reflects the distinct nature of our small group travel by boat,” said Tim Jacox, executive vice president of sales and marketing. “Luxury of Experience really speaks to what Un-Cruise Adventures is all about. With a cap of 88 guests, we are able to experience more of the destinations through a wide range of activities – kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling and hiking under our Luxury and Active Adventures or reenacting history with Heritage Adventures.”
New in 2013
In 2013, the 88-guest Safari Legacy begins operating in Alaska and then sails on the Columbia and Snake Rivers in fall and spring. It debuts Heritage Adventures—a new style of Un-Cruise Adventure with a focus on Living History aboard and ashore. In November 2013, the Wilderness Explorer will begin sailing Active Adventures in the Hawaiian Islands between Oahu and Hawaii, the Big Island. And three Alaska Unleashed departures are scheduled for the Wilderness Adventurer in Alaska for adventurers desiring an amped up week of high adventure.
Moving forward, all company materials will change to reflect the new name of Un-Cruise Adventures. The company’s website URL will change to un-cruise.com.
